Berkeley, California — The Berkeley Endowment Management Company (BEMCO) has named Tarek Saghir as its new President and Chief Investment Officer, responsible for overseeing endowed funds of the UC Berkeley Foundation (UCBF) that were valued at $3.4 billion as of June 2025. BEMCO was established in 2009 to steward endowment gifts entrusted to UCBF to advance the core mission of teaching, research, and public service at UC Berkeley, the nation’s premier public university.

Saghir has served since 2022 as Chief Investment Officer of the Brandeis University Endowment, whose investments have seen significant appreciation under his management. He assumes the leadership of BEMCO on August 3.

“Tarek combines intellectual horsepower, demonstrated investment skill, an empathetic approach to team leadership, and a deep belief in Berkeley’s mission,” said Cyrus Hadidi, Chair of BEMCO’s Board of Directors and a UCBF trustee. “We are excited for the next era of BEMCO under Tarek’s leadership.”

Saghir was hired following a highly competitive national search led by the BEMCO board and a UCBF trustee subcommittee. Hadidi said, “There was tremendous interest in this position, befitting the unique Berkeley ecosystem.”

“It’s a storied institution that plays an incredibly important role as an engine of social mobility,” said Saghir about UC Berkeley. “There is so much opportunity open to BEMCO and Berkeley, and I look forward to seizing it,” including investment opportunities provided by the university’s established record of innovation and entrepreneurship. “It’s a very exciting charge, with a great cause.”
